What Is the Public’s View on Zahid Hamidi’s Acquittal from 40 Corruption Charges?

Must Read

PUTRAJAYA – The Court of Appeal’s decision to uphold the acquittal of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on 40 corruption charges involving Ultra Kirana Sdn Bhd (UKSB) has sparked mixed reactions among Malaysians.

The three-judge panel, chaired by Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali, made the ruling after the prosecution withdrew its appeal against the Shah Alam High Court’s decision to acquit Zahid on September 23, 2022.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Yusaini Amer Abdul Karim stated that, after reviewing the case and the representations submitted by Zahid, the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) found insufficient evidence to establish his guilt.

This ruling has drawn significant attention due to the severity of the allegations, which involved substantial sums of money, including SG$13.56 million (RM47.08 million). The case has prompted public criticism and raised questions about transparency and the effectiveness of the nation’s justice system.

Case Background

Zahid was initially charged with receiving bribes from UKSB to extend the company’s contract as the operator of One Stop Centre (OSC) services in China and to provide the Foreign Visa System (VLN) for the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Although the prosecution initially appealed the High Court’s acquittal, the appeal was later withdrawn after the AGC concluded there was insufficient evidence to prove Zahid had received bribes.

Public Reactions

The decision has evoked varied responses from the public, particularly anti-corruption activists and ordinary citizens. Some view it as a setback in the fight against corruption, while others question the transparency of the legal process.

Several groups have called for greater clarity from the authorities regarding the reasons behind the withdrawal of the appeal.

Conclusion

This decision has sparked a national debate on the integrity of the judicial system and anti-corruption efforts. What actions will the authorities take next to ensure justice and transparency in cases like this?
